Dr.N.C.Patel graduated as an Agricultural Engineer from University of Udaipur, India with first class. He obtained his Masters and Doctorate in Agricultural Engineering with specialization in Crop Process Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (India). During his tenure as an Assistant, Associate and Full Professor he trained and supervised 13 Post-graduate students for their research and dissertation at Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh. He served as Principal and Dean at College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, Junagadh for 9 years.
Six agricultural equipments, mainly harvest and post-harvest machinery developed by him at R&D centre of Jyoti Ltd., Vadodara which were subsequently manufactured and sold to farmers in addition to the development of sprinkler and drip irrigation system. He worked as Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator in several research projects funded by the Government of Gujarat and Government of India and developed several processed food products, technology and machinery to help the entrepreneurs and agro-processors. He published more than 50 research papers in International / National journals. He wrote 7 books and many popular articles.
Looking to his overall contributions and vision in the development of agriculture in Gujarat, the State Government appointed him as the Vice Chancellor of Junagadh Agricultural University (JAU) from 2009 to 2014. In view of the noteworthy developments made by him at JAU, the Government of Gujarat appointed him as the Vice Chancellor of Anand Agricultural University, Anand (Gujarat) for a period of five years (2014 – 2019). As a Vice Chancellor, he established number of new colleges for Diploma, Under Graduate and Post-Graduate programmes in the field of Agriculture and Allied Sector. Several reforms in administration, finance management, research and education were carried out. Number of laboratories, experiential learning units established and strengthened. He helped scientists to obtain NABL accreditation of Food Testing and Pesticide Residue Analysis Laboratories. In addition to this, the advanced plant and animal bio-technology research laboratories established. Successful linkages established with about 40 reputed National and International academic / research and industrial institutions for research and education as well as students / faculty exchange.
He received several awards in recognition of his contribution for agricultural development. They include Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers Fellow Award and the Commendation Medal in 2008, the Scientific Councilor Award in 2011, the Meritorious Service Award in 2014, the Best Personality of the Year (Agriculture) Award in 2015, the Dewang Mehta National Education Award for Outstanding Contribution to Education in 2016. He was also awarded the Honorary Fellow Award by the Indian Society of Agricultural Biochemists, Kanpur in 2016 during the International Conference on “Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods.
He worked as the President of Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers, New Delhi during 2015 to 2017. He also worked as Vice President and President of Indian Agricultural Universities Association, New Delhi in 2017 & 2018 respectively. Dr. Patel worked as the Director in the Board of Management of three corporations of Govt. of Gujarat (Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation, Gujarat State Land Development Corporation (GLDC) and Gujarat State Seeds Corporation (GSSC)) from 2009 to 2014 and again appointed as the Director in the Board of Management of GLDC and GSSC from 2014 to 2019. He worked as a Chairman, Member in 25 Professional / Government bodies of the state of Gujarat and ICAR (Govt. of India).
Dr. Patel visited the countries like; South Africa (2010) as a part of delegation to help Vhembe District Municipality regarding poverty alleviation and employment generation, Thailand to attend 12th Maize International Conference (2014) organized by Asia-Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions, USA (2015) to present a paper in the ASABE International meeting and visit to FAMU, Switzerland (2018) and Nigeria (2019) to attend the Inaugural meeting of World Bank Project on Africa Centre of Excellence for Mycotoxin and Food Safety at FUT, Minna.
