Professor Andrew Saba Gana, was born on the 8th of December, 1962 in Niger state, Nigeria. He attended LEA Primary School Katamba Bologi from 1970- 1976. Thereafter he proceeded to Government Science College Kutigi from 1976-1981. He went to University of Sokoto for his B Sc. Agriculture from 1981- 1987 with a second class upper division and was also the best student in the Faculty. He won the University prize for the best graduating student of the Faculty and Sokoto River Basin Development’s prize for the best graduating student in Animal Science.
He took appointment with Niger state Government as Education Officer and was posted to Government Science College Kagara from 1989 to 1994. At Government Science College Kagara, he was Head of Department; and coordinated Agricultural science examinations in all the science schools in Niger state. He had his Master degree in Crop Production with specialization in Plant Breeding at the University of Ilorin from 1991 to 1994. He did his PhD from the same University and finished in 2006.
In August 1994, he took appointment with National Cereals Research Institute Badeggi, as Research Officer 1. He worked as a rice breeder in the institute, and rose through the ranks and became Chief Research Officer in 2007. While at National Cereals Research Institute Badeggi, he had a working collaborative research work with West African Rice Development Association (WARDA) now African Rice Center. He participated in the rice breeding activities of both lowland and upland rice ecologies. He was part of the Regional Rice Research group of WARDA, known as ROCARIZ. These activities led to the commercial release of the following rice varieties to farmers: FARO 54, 55, 56. Also he participated in the breeding and commercial release of FARO 62 which is currently being cultivated by farmers. He has served as consultant and facilitator to International Fund for Agriculture Development Value Chain Development Program Niger state.
In 2007 he joined the services of Federal University of Technology, Minna as a Senior Lecturer and became a Professor in October 2014. He was Head of Department of Crop Production, from 2011-2013. He has supervised about 30 undergraduates, 16 master students and 14 PhD students He is a member of Genetics Society of Nigeria, Crop Science Society of Nigeria and Biotechnology Society of Nigeria. He has more than 60 publications in journals, book chapters and conference proceedings.
